Habit: Upright, mounding
Flower: White flowers with a pink to violet striped lip grow on a loose spike
Bloom Season: It will only flower under tropical conditions.
Foliage: Lance-like leaves reach 2 ft. & are smooth, dark green.
Fruit: Thin-walled, smooth-skinned, oblong, greenish capsules about 3/4 in.
Flavor: Spicy
Fragrance: Clean, antiseptic
Sun: Filtered shade

Water: Continually wet
Tolerant: Drought
Attracts: Butterflies
Uses: Seeds can be chewed to sweeten the breath and to detoxify caffeine effects. Used as a spice in cooking , curry powders, flavor confectioneries, liqueurs and chewing gums & medicines. Sometimes it is ground & mixed with coffee.  There are many medicinal uses, but always consult your doctor before using any of them.
Harvesting: Very labor intensive
